  • Message from CCBC regarding the Draft Library Service Strategic Vision 2024–2028

    Wed 06 Nov 2024

We have been asked to share the following message on behalf of Caerphilly County Borough Council.

Draft Library Service Strategic Vision 2024–2028

Residents are being encouraged to have their say on a bold plan to transform the way Caerphilly County Borough Council’s library service is delivered in future.

The consultation will help the council to better understand the needs of the community in order to shape the development of the hub vision; a model that has been tried and tested at the popular library hub site in Rhymney.

The vision indicates that the development of the hub model would result in an overall reduction in library venues, to allow the council to focus on the development of improved town centre hubs providing a one-stop-shop approach for community services.

As part of the consultation, we have developed a survey for young people and would be grateful if you could share it with young people who may wish to have their say on the future of library services.

Completed surveys can either be handed in to your local library or can be sent to:

Caerphilly County Borough Council, Engagement Team, Penallta House, Tredomen Park, Ystrad Mynach, Hengoed. CF82 7PG

Please return any completed surveys by 3rd December 2024.

  • October Newsletter

    Fri 25 Oct 2024 L Jones

    Dear parents and carers,

We have come to the end of our first half-term of the year. It has been very busy - the children have worked hard, and it has been lovely to see the progress they have already made. It was lovely to have such a fantastic turn-out for Parents’ Evening and for our Shw Mae Day – thank you all.

    Important Announcement

Mrs. Felicity Rogers, our Chair of Governors, has resigned her position as Chair, although she continues to serve as a valued member of our Governing Body. I would like to thank Mrs. Rogers for her dedication and commitment to the school.

Our new Chair of Governors is Mrs. Sian Clemens and we are very grateful to Mrs. Clemens for taking on the role and look forward to working with her. Our Vice Chair of Governors is Rev. Gary Powell.

We have a vacancy for a parent governor. If you are interested in this role, please collect a form from the office by November 15th.

    School Uniform

It has been lovely to see almost all the children in uniform. If for some reason you are unable to purchase uniform for your child, please get in touch as we may be able to help.

As we allow jogging bottoms, polo shirts and trainers as part of our school uniform, the children can do PE lessons in their uniform from now on, and there is no need to send them in different clothes on PE days.

    Attendance and Punctuality

Our attendance to October 18th is 90.2%. This is lower than we would like and suggests that a number of our pupils are missing too many days. The Education Welfare Officer, who scrutinises our attendance, will be liaising with Mrs. Gould to discuss pupils whose attendance is a concern.

Our Pupil Attendance Council have created a fantastic video on the reasons why school attendance is important that can be accessed on our https://www.greenhillprm.co.uk/attendance-at-greenhill/.

As registration starts at 9am, the class teachers and LSAs close the side gates promptly at this time. All latecomers need to come through the main door and sign-in. Late arrivals disrupt the class and mean the pupils are missing out on our morning check-ins or literacy carousels which start straight way, so it is important your child arrives in school on time.

    Many thanks

  • Announcement from CCBC regarding School Transport

    Thu 24 Oct 2024

We have been asked to share the following message on behalf of Caerphilly County Borough Council.

Caerphilly County Borough Council is considering making changes to its current home-to-school and college transport policy.

A six week consultation period starts this week (Monday 16 September) to gather feedback from the community about the planned changes.

The council is facing significant financial challenges over the next few years and must save £45 million pounds to balance the budget. Many services are being reviewed in order to identify savings and deliver efficiencies.

School transport currently costs over £10.7 million each year and Caerphilly is one of the last Local Authorities in Wales to provide a higher level of discretionary transport, well above Welsh Government’s statutory requirements.

If agreed, any changes to the home-to-school and college transport policy would come into effect from September 2025.

The consultation will seek views on changing to the statutory minimum distance of 2 miles for primary aged children (currently 1.5 miles) and 3 miles for secondary aged children (currently 2 miles).

The potential removal of the discretionary mileage element for mainstream provision would bring it in line with WG statutory distance criteria, resulting in an annual saving of £1.5million.

The proposed alterations will still mean that:

Learners will continue to be able to select their ‘relevant’ school in accordance with their preference of English medium, Welsh medium, or faith school.
The provision of transport for post-16 learners will continue, but the distance criteria will change from 2 miles to 3 miles and the provision of transport for early years/nursery will continue (dependent on spare vehicle capacity) but the distance criteria will change from 1.5 miles to 2 miles.
Provision of discretionary transport for learners with Additional Learning Needs will continue.
A CCBC spokesperson said, “The council’s transport budget is under significant financial pressure and we are one of the last councils in Wales to offer a more generous discretionary mileage policy.”

“These proposed changes have been carefully considered, but it is important that we consult those affected and fully consider the views of the community before we agree any changes in future.”

The closing date for the consultation is 28th October and further information on how to have your say can be found here: https://conversation.caerphilly.gov.uk/home-to-school-transport

    School uniform

It has been lovely to see almost all the children in uniform. If for some reason you are unable to purchase uniform for your child, please get in touch as we may be able to help. Please note that it is now Autumn and ‘short’ shorts are not appropriate outside of PE.

    Broken Bones

If your child has broken a bone, we need to complete a risk assessment before they can return to school. Please phone the office and we will endeavour to arrange a meeting to complete this as soon as possible.

Expectations of all adults on site

I have received concerns regarding the language of adults on school premises. Swearing is not appropriate in our grounds and in front of our children, and persistent offenders could face a premises ban. Vaping/smoking in any part of school grounds, including the turning circle, is not permitted.

    Parent Governors

We have a vacancy for a Parent Governor. Please contact the office if you are interested.

  • Sports Day: We Try Again!

    Thu 06 Jun 2024 C Pepperell

    Dear parents/guardians

As you are aware, tomorrow (June 7th) we hope to hold our annual Sports Day.  This is obviously weather-dependent and we will make a decision early tomorrow depending on the conditions.

The timings for the day are:

    Infants: 9:30

    Juniors 13:30

Please make sure your child is wearing appropriate footwear, NO JEWELLERY and log hair is tied back. I know you have also been contacted by their class teacher regarding wearing clothes in their house colours if possible. If it is warm, please make sure your child is wearing sunscreen and a hat, and has their shoulders covered.

Please remember: Parents are not permitted to cross the track; you must stay behind the cordoned area.

We know it is lovely to see your child but please do not call them to you. The teachers and teaching assistants need to know where all our children are to keep them safe.

We are aware some of our younger children may become upset and want to sit with you. However, once one child does this, it can have quite a knock-on effect and several children may then want to sit with their parents/ carers which would be unmanageable.

School staff will take children to the toilet. The toilets will not be open for public use.

We are looking forward to a wonderful day. We have talked with the children about the importance of good sportsmanship and that taking part is what matters - they are all very excited.

Thank you for your continued support.

    C. Pepperell
